Randie Thorton, an accomplished artist and pilot, gets invited to a Caribbean island that her best friend from long ago purchased after he won the lottery. Randie hasn't seen Oakley Lawson in years, years that are marred by a tragedy that Randie cannot bring herself to face or even speak of. Consequently, she has ignored the invitations as the Caribbean is the last place on earth she would ever want to revisit. However, Oakley Lawson doesn't give up, even though he has no idea where she is, and has to go through her mother to get the invitations to Randie.

 

Time passes but the invitations don't stop. Randie finally takes Oakley up on his offer and flies in for a visit. She is greeted by a very fit, good-looking and apparently happy man and their relationship picks up as if no time has passed between them. But Oakley sees the haunted look in her eyes and cannot say anything for he doesn't want to chase her away after all of these years without contact.

Randie starts to become concerned about him because he has chosen to live an isolated island life with only a clowder of cats for company and because of his repeated requests for her to stay, and wonders if he feels like he made a lifestyle mistake. Then she meets some of his neighbors, gets invited to an Island Club gathering and realizes he isn't alone at all and learns there is a bizarre thread that ties them all together.

 

But islands, though beautiful as they are, can also harbor their own mysteries and dangers, and a murderer may even be lurking among them. Randie realizes she and Oakley must help the authorities solve the mysteries, and they must do it quickly, unaware that the past that Randie has been trying so hard to avoid might just hold the key that not only unlocks the door to the answers surrounding the mysteries of the islands, but also that of her own heart.
